September 14, 1983âJohn had approached Paul with a song he had written a few days earlier that had no lyrics, just a few chords. Paul liked it and the two sat down to finish it off. Just then they saw some activity in the control room. It turned out that Brian Wilson had accepted their offer to join them in the studio. When Wilson entered the studio, the band was in shock to see the talented musician/producer in such bad shape. He was almost unrecognizable and stumbled a bit as he approached them. Brian had fallen on hard times emotionally. He had been struggling with mental health and drug problems.
They shook hands, sat, and talked for a while. John couldnât help but feel sad for this musical legend. It appeared to him that Wilsonâs best days were behind the former Beach Boys leader. They discussed the song they were working on and asked if Brian would help finish it. Immediately after showing Wilson the chords, the producer/musician came to life. He was considered a musical genius by his peers and had been one of the main inspirations for what many believe is the greatest album of all time, Sgt. Pepper. Paul added words and Brian showed him a melody to follow. He then had John sing a lower harmony while he took the upper harmony using his high falsetto vocals. Before the two Beatles knew it, Brian had taken over. He wrote an intro, a middle bridge, and an ending. He also added more background harmonies to fill out the new song, âExistential.â
George and Ringo had been watching the creation of the song in amazement. They had heard how Wilson would work in the studio and were witnessing it firsthand. They were now ready to record. They spent the next three hours recording the music for the basic track and then another four hours on the vocals. It progressed into an incredible combination of the Beatles and Beach Boys sound. John and Paulâs voices blended perfectly with Brianâs. The vocal performance with the three of them was spine-tingling. The boys were thrilled at the sound of this song, and even though Brian was not quite himself, his true genius shone through. It would be another chart-topper and would stay at Number 1 for six weeks.
